Lewis - 53 miles off the northwest coast at Ullapool, with great beaches, walking, hiking and boat trips DT

Mull - 12 miles off the west coast at Oban, wildlife, hiking, and boat tours to Ulva, Iona, and Staffa for Fingals Cave . DT

Orkney - 10 miles off the north coast at John O Groats, historic sights, boat trips to the German High Seas Fleet, wildlife trips . DT

Shetland - 150 miles off the northeast coast at Aberdeen, furthest north part of the UK with dramtic scenery and historic sights

Skye - 2 miles off the west coast with many boat trips, dramatic scenery, walks, mountain hiking, and trips to other islands . DT

Cumbrae - 2 miles off the southwest coast at Largs, popular for water sports and cycling . DT

Eigg - 16 miles off the northweast coast at Mallaig, popular for walking, hiking, beaches, caves, and kayaking . DT

Gigha - 3 miles off the west coast at the Mull of Kintyre, community run popular for camping, walking and hiking . DT

Iona - 1 mile off the west coast of Mull, contains the first Abbey built in Scotland, burial place of many Scottish kings . DT

Muck - 22 miles off the northwest coast at Mallaig, popular for walking and island crafts, also some day trips . DT

Rum - 20 miles off the west coast at Mallaig, walking, hiking, biking, fishing, shooting and some day trips . DT

Tiree - 68 miles off the west coast at Oban, popular for its beaches, surfing and walking, thursday day trips summer.

Uist North & South - remote islands about 30 miles off the northwest coast of Skye, good beaches, walk/hiking and boat tours

Holy Isle - 15 miles off the southwest coast at Ardrossan, for walking/hiking and has a Buddha Retreat

Inchcolm - 4 miles off the east coast at South Queensferry by Edinburgh, a scenic island with a well preserved Abbey

Staffa - 8 miles off the west coast at Mull, uninhabited with large basalt rock structures and the legendary Fingals Cave

St Kilda - 40 miles off the Outer Hebrides islands, 90 miles off the northwest coast, one of the most scenic places in the UK
